Surprise Party in Room 1

Moon and Miniver have been working hard since Mia had taken Draco out on their date.

Decorations (in the colours Miniver had suggested instead of Moon's rainbow idea) are hung in the room. Crepe paper braids of orange, greyish blue, and green streak the ceiling. Moon's put up little paper decorations of cakes, balloons, and cartoonish animals dancing. Along with the cardboard balloons, there are huge groups of orange, grey-blue, and green helium balloons scattered all over.

On a table, with a colourful tablecloth depicting very happy cats and dogs partying, is the cake Skill had artfully created for Draco. It's wide sheet cake; the white icing is the basis for the artistically piped images of Martin and Dart flying over a huge forest full of winding paths. The forest ended where the words 'Happy Birthday, Draco!' were written in flowing script. It was the sort of cake a tarot card would make.

Moon giggles as she sets a stack of gifts (all from her family for the birthday boy) on the table beside the cake. She turns to Miniver and grins.

"I hope he's surprised," she says proudly.

It was definitely bright and cheerful and there's glitter everywhere, including on Miniver and Moon.

She laughs.

"He is very nice, the sort of person I might like to have in my family, but I don't fancy him the way I do you."

And she gives him the look again.

"I don't mind going for a walk with you, but we have been together nearly all day. Or do you feel cheated out of a date because I had to take you in order to keep you from discovering the party sooner?"

She puts the back of a hand on her forehead melodramatically.

"Oh, how can I ever expect you to forgive me my deception?"

Draco nodded, "Oh yes please. I'll be careful with her."

Draco considered, idly tapping his finger against his chin, "Well, since you put it that way... I think you will have to find ways to make it up to me. Not really a date when you *have* to take somebody, is it? Both people should be... willing to go."

Moon meets his eyes.

"I know you will, or else we wouldn't have chosen you." She gives him another kiss. "Happy birthday, Draco."

"Oh? Were you not willing?"

Her turn to think.

"Now that you mention it, you were pretty reluctant to leave. Something about what's a few more minutes, if I remember right. I suppose I do have to make it up to you."

Heavy sigh, and then with the air of great sacrifice:

"All right, as many dances with me as you like, minus the one for Rabastan of course, and the privilege of escorting me back to my room. And, if you'd like to keep it, the black ribbon I had asked about in order to attend the party myself."

Draco nodded, and then grinned at her, "It's a deal then." He kissed her again, but on the cheek this time.

He then leaned over to whisper in her ear, "Next time, you should wear that scent again. It suits you."

She nods.

Dare she tell him Potter complimented her on it first?

No. She won't spoil his birthday by telling him Harry beat him to it.

Besides, Harry might have beaten him on that, but Draco was far closer to holding her heart.

It's like the difference between seeing the glimmer of gold and feeling the fluttering wings in your hand.

The joy of music knows no status; it can be enjoyed regardless of how much money you may have in your purse, how many titles people may want to give you.

The flow of Mia's white dress while she moves suggests it's time to dance.

She holds out a hand to Rabastan, a bright smile on her face.

Draco's had her nearly all day. Surely he can wait his turn while she makes sure his uncle lives up to his word.

"Shall we?"

"I hope you'll like it."

It's a slim parcel. When Draco opens it, he'll find the latest issue of Transfiguration Today. A page is marked with a silver filigree bookmark. When Draco turns to that page, he'll see an article entitled "Theoretical Transfiguration and in Doorway and Opening Charmwork" credited to one Thomas Riddle and one Daniel Mallory.

"I can't use our real names, of course, but you did quite a lot of research for me on this particular article, and I thought you deserved the credit."

For one article anyway. It is Draco's birthday present after all.

Draco blinked at that, and skimmed over the page. A published writer.

He quietly replied, "Cheers... Tom." He likes it, and is rather stunned for a moment.

He grins.

"So how is this birthday treating you? You and Mia seem to be quite smitten with each other."

Draco started to speak, and then cleared his throat.

He started again by replying with, "Well, we were out on a date to her world. Wanted to me to see what it's like, and showed me this place she had found. Not bad for a place to start, though rather small. But it's clean and available. If it works out, I might move some things from the Manor if I can there."

"You know my thoughts on the matter. I forget I was a part of the Wizarding world at times. I'm pleased your visit went well."

He glances in her direction.

"She's a fine lady, your Mia."

Draco turned to look, and his expression softened at the sight of her, bits of starlight glitter still twinkling in the dark curly strands, "She is. Though, she's not exactly mine yet. She just decided that she wants to have a chance to know me better, since she knew the other lad for much longer. I'm still hoping though."

He added, "I er, half proposed to her yesterday. Joking around, but it kind of came out. Tried to brush it off. She said she wasn't ready to say yes, but admitted that to say no would be a lie."

"Please tell me you were drinking at the time," he deadpans.

He told Door he loved her for the first time in much the same way.

Draco gave a small chuckle, and shook his head. "We were playing around, and it slipped out." Well, more like fooling around... A little. >.>

He claps Draco on the back.

"Words like that tend to do so. I'm very happy for you."

And he accepts the proffered hand, pulling it up to his mouth for a gentlemanly kiss.

"Of course."

Mia won't mind if he's not the best of dancers?

She's just happy to dance with someone she likes.

Mia however, well, the guild has had those fancy parties before. The ones she was expected to go to as the Guildmaster's daughter, the ones that she was expected to dance at.

She's not the greatest, but she's certainly not bad.

That's good then. They'll counter-balance each other out.

He leads her onto a free spot in the room, grinning.

So glad he came today!

She's glad he did too, especially when she saw how he and Draco were when they came in.

"Thank you for coming to the party, Rabastan," she says as she follows him. "I wasn't sure for a while."

If it would be all right. But if Draco had done anything.

Well, she'd fight through the others to pull him out by his ear and give him a talking-to, birthday boy or not.

"But he seems to be fine as long as I don't fall in love with you instead."

His turn to get her playful eye.

"So no falling in love with me, all right? I've enough wizards to spare, thank you. Besides, I have a distinct lack of uncles."

Surprisingly he does not step on Mia's feet.

"I did have some doubts, but I decided that I ought to make the most of my opportunities to spend time with family, irregardless of what some might think."

"Some" being people like Misery, for example.

He grins. "Of course not. Draco might never forgive me if I stole his lady from him."

Pause.

"'Uncle'? Is this getting serious between you two?"

You're not losing a nephew you're gaining a niece, right?

There's that sheepish blushing again.

"Well, when we were talking last night, Draco had, half-jokingly mind you, asked me to marry him."

But half-joking means he was half-serious.

"He did eh?" Rabastan asks with a conspiratorial smirk. He doesn't think Draco would ask Mia for her hand if the idea wasn't being seriously considered—half-joking or no.

"Well if he does then you'll be a very welcome member of the family."

"I'm not exactly opposed to the idea myself. And I told Draco much the same thing. I know I'm not ready to say yes just yet, but if saying no means that I
do not want to at all, then that isn't the answer either."

Her blush is lovely, but even more lovely when she smiles.

"He is the first to ever ask me."

But he has been the first to do a lot of things with Mia.
