Surprise Party in Room 1

Moon and Miniver have been working hard since Mia had taken Draco out on their date.

Decorations (in the colours Miniver had suggested instead of Moon's rainbow idea) are hung in the room. Crepe paper braids of orange, greyish blue, and green streak the ceiling. Moon's put up little paper decorations of cakes, balloons, and cartoonish animals dancing. Along with the cardboard balloons, there are huge groups of orange, grey-blue, and green helium balloons scattered all over.

On a table, with a colourful tablecloth depicting very happy cats and dogs partying, is the cake Skill had artfully created for Draco. It's wide sheet cake; the white icing is the basis for the artistically piped images of Martin and Dart flying over a huge forest full of winding paths. The forest ended where the words 'Happy Birthday, Draco!' were written in flowing script. It was the sort of cake a tarot card would make.

Moon giggles as she sets a stack of gifts (all from her family for the birthday boy) on the table beside the cake. She turns to Miniver and grins.

"I hope he's surprised," she says proudly.

It was definitely bright and cheerful and there's glitter everywhere, including on Miniver and Moon.

Moon hands him a cake knife.

"Go on and cut it. Eat a new path," she says with an excited giggle.

Draco gave her an odd look at that, but then smiled. He then cut the cake, and placed the knife down. Better that he doesn't try to cut slices, because he doesn't know his way around a kitchen at all. Never had a reason to.

"You've not done this before, have you?" she whispers with a smile.

Draco glanced back, and just shook his head. Usually his parents helped, or a servant took care of cutting and serving.

Moon gives him a reassuring grin.

"Like this," she says, doing as Skill had showed her on the practice cakes. She cuts a smallish square of the cake, puts it on the plate and hands it off. "Not so bad, hmm?"

"Oh," Draco then whispered back to her, "Do I have to?"

She laughs sweetly.

"No. I suppose not." Moon continues to cut and hand out cake. "I brought you a very special gift," she says when enough cake had been cut and she'd wiped her hands. "Don't know how much you'll like it, and you can't keep it just yet."

"Oh? What's that?" Draco glanced at her with interest at the words, 'very', 'special', and 'gift' all together.

Moon motions for him to wait there, and she ducks into the bathroom. When she comes back, she has a tiny white fluff ball in her hands. Its eyes are barely open, and they're bright, bright blue.

"It's one of Mons' puppies. She's yours. It won't take her long before she's yakking your ear off. When she's big enough, in a few weeks, I'll take her from Mons and she'll officially be yours to care for."

She gently offers the tiny ball fluff to him, so he can begin bonding with her.

Draco took the tiny ball of fluff carefully, and stared at her for a moment. She seemed so small and fragile.

"Mine? But I don't know how to take care of a pet." He carefully reached a finger down to pet her head slightly. Barely more than a touch of his fingertip.

"You'll learn. And when you do something wrong, she'll be quick to tell you."

The little wolf was the ideal pet. A pet that could tell you how you were screwing up while nipping at your ankles.

"You'll have to give her a name. She was the only white one born, and I thought of you when I saw her. The little white ferret with his big, white wolf."

Draco thought of what name would be good. But the ferret comment made him pause.

Sharpened glance at Moon, "...Who told you about that? I didn't even tell Miniver or Mia."

She gives him a smile.

"I know quite a lot about you, Draco. Served you right, you know. But I think a fox is more you. At least a fox can give a wolf a run for her money."

"It was Crouch's fault really." Draco replied as he focused on the tiny pup again. She gave a tiny puppy yawn, and seem to snuggle against his hands for warmth. You have to be utter stone or evil not to melt at that.

Draco was neither.

"I'll be able to speak to her in my fox form too. Alhena might like that." Following the tradition of star related names. It was a star in his birth constellation of Gemini. Since the constellation Draco didn't really have anything quite appropriate in star names.

Moon gives a quiet squee.

It was all so cute!

"You needed a conscience. She will do until you find your own." The wolves were like that. Guardians. Guides. Nags. "She'll be big. Like Mons and Mare."

Her name meant shining or strutting. So it worked.

Draco was kind of focused on the wolf cub so it took a moment for Moon's words to sink in.

"What? And oh, that big. Well, would make sense." The cub has closed her eyes again, and had fallen asleep.

"I think it's a perfect fit. And the rest of the family sent gifts to help prepare your rooms for her when she's ready to come here," she explains. "Had to give her to you first or else the food and water dishes wouldn't have made much sense."

"Of course it would've been, which is why you have her first and then all the other stuff later!"

The family had sent a bed for the puppy, food and water bowls, collar, brushes, and toys.

"You'll be all set for her."

"Oh excellent then."

Draco studied the wolf cub a little longer, and then quietly asked Moon, "Do I have to wait a month?"

"She can't be away from Mons long. When she wakes up, she's going to be hungry. You planning on nursing her?" Moon asks, giving a little poke to Draco's rather flat chest.

Draco's skin briefly paled to an almost grey as he realized.

"Oh no, of course not." He glanced down at the cub, and then reluctantly handed her back.

She accepts the sleeping puppy back into her arms.

"You can visit her anytime you like. Or I can bring her for visits with you so you keep bonding. Bonding's very important."

Moon meets his eyes.

"I know you will, or else we wouldn't have chosen you." She gives him another kiss. "Happy birthday, Draco."
