Surprise Party in Room 1

Moon and Miniver have been working hard since Mia had taken Draco out on their date.

Decorations (in the colours Miniver had suggested instead of Moon's rainbow idea) are hung in the room. Crepe paper braids of orange, greyish blue, and green streak the ceiling. Moon's put up little paper decorations of cakes, balloons, and cartoonish animals dancing. Along with the cardboard balloons, there are huge groups of orange, grey-blue, and green helium balloons scattered all over.

On a table, with a colourful tablecloth depicting very happy cats and dogs partying, is the cake Skill had artfully created for Draco. It's wide sheet cake; the white icing is the basis for the artistically piped images of Martin and Dart flying over a huge forest full of winding paths. The forest ended where the words 'Happy Birthday, Draco!' were written in flowing script. It was the sort of cake a tarot card would make.

Moon giggles as she sets a stack of gifts (all from her family for the birthday boy) on the table beside the cake. She turns to Miniver and grins.

"I hope he's surprised," she says proudly.

It was definitely bright and cheerful and there's glitter everywhere, including on Miniver and Moon.

Draco shook his head, "No, but your prestige was something you were born with. Not like him."

He loftily added, "He was probably just pretending not to like it. Trying to act humble when he's really not. At least you weren't fooled by him."

There's a good reason why Harry's a counter to Voldemort, but also more so a counter to Draco. Opposing sides of the same coin. Both with elements of the other in themselves.

"How is it different? How did I earn the honor that comes with my family name simply by existing? What did I do of any merit when I was a baby that Harry didn't in his infancy?"

Draco shrugged, "It just is. It's different when you inherit it. It's in your blood." Yeah, he still has that mentality some on inheritance and bloodlines.

"My blood. That might not be purely magic, or even purely human."

Even the narration is having a hard time reading Mia's look.

"Inheritance is just luck. Random. It could have happened to anyone, not necessarily me. It's not really different at all."

They might just have to agree to disagree on this.

Draco paused in mid-step, and stared back at her, "What? What do you mean by that? What else besides human?"

And not purely magic, well, he might have vaguely heard something about that. Feelings were slightly torn, but he sort of considered Wednesday a Squib. Even though she was likely a muggle really, or mostly.

"I had told you Ghaleon might be my biological father, right? He wasn't human. Not a beastman like Master Mel, but not human, either. In fact, I have never seen anyone else like Ghaleon. He had no family. He is sort of...."

She looks for the way to describe him.

"Well, he was pale, more so than most, with silver hair and pointed ears. Most thought him very handsome, particularly fairies."

Maybe a sort of veela?

That would explain a lot.

Now, it could likely mean elf, but the elves that Draco were used to were house-elf.

And the rest of that description...

He took a step back at that, "You might be part Veela?"

And unless Ghaleon is one, elves don't really exist at all in Mia's world.

"I'm afraid I don't know what a Veela is. But if Ghaleon was one, then yes, I might be part Veela."

"Well, Veela are normally female in my world, and can look human. Seen as extremely beautiful, and yet can look like birds at times. It's hard for any man to resist them."

And granted him, and others in his family had been accused of having Veela blood due to their pale looks. Yet considering how they were, it was hard to find evidence of it. Though they swear by their Pureblood status.

But he was still backing away, unsure and hesitant now. Was it just veela charm that caused him to act like this? Couldn't be. He didn't react this bad when Fleur visited Hogwarts.

"That doesn't sound as likely then. I've never seen Ghaleon look like a bird. I think the only way he could be one then is if the legends about Lunar and the Blue Star are true and Veelas have evolved more into what Ghaleon was."

She feels distant in more ways than one now.

And distinctly looks hurt.

So does he, and very unsure of things.

"I don't know, but what about veela charm? Is that all this is?" He was aware that he acted strangely around her, wanting to do more for her than anyone else. And it seemed sudden, like a spell almost.

"Did you do that to me? Is it a lie?"

"I would never consciously do that to anyone."

She puts her hands on her arms.

"And besides, it doesn't really work the other way around, does it?"

Draco paused, and stood still before her.

"No, usually not. It's just one way..." He studied her for a moment at that.

She steps closer to him.

And there is a lot that she can think to say.

Why should I charm you when I could have any man I want at home?

Why would I bother when I already had a sweetheart when I met you?

Do you really think so little of me to believe that I need inhuman charms to be loved?

Why should it matter if I'm not completely human?

But her mouth only says this.

"I love you."

It threw him some briefly. The idea of it, and then wondering about any children or descendants. And he didn't have Legilmancy so he had no idea of the other thoughts.

But he relaxed at that admission.

"I love you too. Sorry, it was... for once I'm trying to be as honest as I can with this. It wouldn't fair to either of us otherwise, would it?"

"You're right. As I've said before, you are your own person, free to do as you like. I won't force you to do anything, not even to be with me. It's up to you."

Her hands drop to her sides.

Draco stepped towards her until he was right in front of her. He cupped her chin, and remarked, "So are you. I don't want to force you to do anything either." He stayed there, looking back at her.

She smiles at him.

If there is any charm in it, it is only because she is a young woman standing before the man she loves.

"Then everything will be all right."

And she had to know whatever heart had been buried in the ice inside of him, it was hers.

"Good," he quietly replied, "Sorry we stopped dancing."

She nuzzles his hand a little.

"No, I'm sorry. You had to know sooner or later, but this didn't have to be the time and place for you to find out."

She takes his hand again and moves closer to him to dance again.

"I think I owe you another dance after all that."

Draco took her by the waist to dance again, and couldn't resist remarking hopefully, "Perhaps even a little more than just another dance?"

He keeps trying.

"Well, a little more can't hurt," she admits right before she kisses him.

There's that wicked glint of glee in his eyes again, and he pulled her closer. Kissing back as they danced, little tugs at her bottom lip, a brief touch of tongue.

Boy, hope one of them knows where they're going. Or that everyone else will have the courtesy to get out of their way. Dancing and kissing can be dangerous.

Well, they had moved a bit slower now, and Draco was trying to guide a little. In fact their dancing soon slowed to rocking back and forth in time to the music while they kissed again.

Hey, it's his birthday, he's entitled to birthday smooches.

Now hopefully he won't be so bold as attempt to swallow her tonsils or be very obvious about it for Mia's sake.
